In its two-year collaboration with the Musiktheater im Revier and the Ringlokschuppen Ruhr, the artist collective KGI is now devoting itself to one of the most eye-catching works in opera history: “Victory over the Sun”. Building on the project "Und jetzt alle!" (And now everyone!) in the 20108/2019 season, KGI continued its performative exploration of opera, body and labour with this futuristic opera.

Premiered in 1913, “Victory over the Sun” was one of the great theatrical scandals and only saw two performances. It was a 'Gesamtkunstwerk' in the spirit of the Russian avant-garde by Mikhail Matyushin (music), Alexei Kruchonich (text) and Kazimir Malevich (stage and costumes). Amateur actors, surreal lyrics, sounds, light effects, movements and Cubist design broke all the rules that had previously applied in musical theatre.

For the artist collective KGI, the opera, of which only fragments have survived, is the foil of a sunken utopia in which a common principle stands against any form of rule and exclusion. In “Victory over the Sun”, this claim is total: the sun is locked in a "concrete house" because in the dream of ending the last dominion, the sun alone cannot decide over day and night. The fragments of this historical work of art give rise to a new utopia of opera.

The coronavirus restrictions forced the KGI team to rethink things. In just three weeks, they made an opera film the likes of which the world has never seen!
