Although the German health care system is considered one of the best in the world, there are nevertheless structural problems with regard to the situation of refugees and immigrants. These include language barriers and a lack of comprehensive information, but also often low awareness of differences in attitudes toward certain areas of the health care system (e.g. taboo diseases). Insurance rights and entitlements are in some cases not easily accessible to immigrants. Differences in the health needs of immigrants from countries outside of Europe are often not part of the training or professional experience of physicians in Germany, e.g. the knowledge that specific medications are not tolerated by many people from African countries. To address these shortcomings, Silent University Ruhr is organizing a series of lectures, seminars and workshops aimed at raising awareness about some of these discrepancies. With the support of organizations of immigrant health care workers (e.g. CAMFOMEDICS), Silent University Ruhr aims to raise awareness about the urgent needs that need attention in the various immigrant communities in the Ruhr region.
