THESMOPHORIA - THE NEW ANCIENT THEATRE

kainkollektiv

Post-Antiquity Theatre Festival
Friday 27. September 2024, 16.00 Uhr

Info: Premiere | 30h Durational Performance | multi-lingual | Translation: GE, EN

On extensive research trips to Athens and the Peloponnese over the past two years,
kainkollektiv has explored the ‘historical & mythical origins’ of European theatre in Ancient Greece in order to track down the ‘art of assembly’ of the time. In the process, they also came across the ancient women's theatre festival of THESMOPHORIA, which was always celebrated in autumn for three days and three nights in honour of the goddesses Demeter and Persephone.

Under the title THESMOPHORIA. THE NEW ANCIENT THEATRE, kainkollektiv, together withan ensemble of international artists, invites you to not only reconstruct this festival in a 30-hour durational performance, but to reinvent it for our current situation. Following thestory of Demeter, the goddess of earth and fertility, and her daughter Persephone, who wasabducted by Hades and taken to the underworld and the world of the dead, we embark on asearch for what this mythical story can tell us about ourselves and our current globalsituation. And along the way, we will share, learn and try out lost gestures and ritualstogether, which should allow us not only to imagine visions for a ‘good life together’ in the near future, but also to test them out and celebrate them together.

In performances, dance, music, film, rituals and joint workshops - the so-called Schools of Care - these visions come to life and become negotiable. The audience is not only invited to watch and listen, but also to actively participate, to experience and to stay where there is a desire and interest to do so. If you like, you can spend the full 30 hours with us and the ensemble in the theatre, share time and space together, eat, even spend the night in the theatre.

However, it is also possible to leave the Thesmophoria - and come back again later and thus meet the 30 hours with your own rhythm.

To make this possible, we would like to communicate a number of tips and recommendations in advance of the performances, which should allow you to prepare for your visit to THESMOPHORIA in the best possible way.

The performance THESMOPHORIA cordially invites all those who are interested and have the desire and curiosity to try out the ‘art of assembly’ in the reinvention of an ancient theatre festival and, in times of increasing social polarisation, to dare to experiment with sharing time, space and rituals between art and care:

THESMOPHORIA.

ALL TO THE NEW ANCIENT THEATRE!

30h de performance continue à regarder, à écouter et à participer activement.

More information

In the summer of 2022, kainkollektiv set off on a major research trip to Greece (Peloponnese/Athens). With the attempt to trace ancient theatre as the starting point of (European) theatre and political history as well as the current political situation of Europe in its south-eastern (peripheral) centre, we pursued the goal of giving new dimensions to our years of theatrical work on (extra-)European heritage. And after all the interruptions caused by the pandemic, we finally got back on the road - where kainkollektiv's projects always develop most productively.

So the first weeks of the research project literally took place on the road - in trips to the ancient centres of Argos, Mycenae, Corinth, Epidauros, Tyrins; in visits to the ruins of a history whose foundations can still be read today as the ‘history of civilisation’ in Europe; not least in visits to the ancient theatre complexes from which European theatre originated and where current performances - with more than 10. 000 spectators in the large amphitheatre of Epidauros - still let us sense the power of this open-air exit. And how great the distance between this experience and that of the ‘locked-in’ theatre of the black box is, especially in times of a pandemic.

From here, our search movement opened up to various discussion and interview partners, especially with regard to the current (political) situation in Athens: from street food initiatives for the homeless and refugees to student protests at the art academies (including a three-month occupation of the National Theatre!) against the government's downgrading of art courses to school level, to participation in workshop meetings of Athens' independent theatre scene and the seminar of an old drama professor, these encounters were as diverse as they were impressive. And so, bit by bit, over the course of a year, during which we shot a film in Athens, developed a radio play and sketched out various aesthetic visions for a post-antique theatre festival, we arrived at the concrete fantasy of the Thesmophoria, the secret women's autumn festival dedicated to the mysteries of life and celebrated in the name of the goddesses Demeter and Persephone.
