Info: ya² festival for contemporary music | Kunsthaus Essen | April 21 2024

The ya² festival is a music and art festival. The theme of ya² is "silence" in all its facets and manifestations: there will be a sound art exhibition, concerts, lectures and workshops. Admission is free. The festival takes place at Kunsthaus Essen.

Abstract

My presentation discusses the role of intercultural communication among individuals of varying social status and cultural backgrounds, emphasising its presence in artistic works. It highlights the limitation of verbal expression in fully conveying the culture, values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors within a community. This presentation argues that visual art forms, particularly music, dance, and performing arts, serve as crucial tools for non-verbal communication. In my position as coordinator of the SUR, I plan to leverage the interpretive ambiguity in music cultures like Afro beats, Arab Pop, and European Pop and Rock. The lecture aims to explore and promote contact with diverse music genres and traditions, presenting them as a window into the contemporary reality of unity in a diverse world.
Music, in this context, is seen as a powerful instrument to break the silence surrounding various cultures and traditions.
