Redefining Narratives: Cultural Institutions and Migration
How can a Western institution help change the narrative on migration? What artistic practices would benefit from this?
Starting with these radical questions, Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana, in collaboration with Suha Nabhan (Migration Jam), invites professionals, activists and artists to take part in the debate about the role of cultural institutions as agents of social change.
Symposium: Changing Narratives by Changing Perspectives about migration
The Silent University Ruhr (SUR) plays a vital role in a panel aiming to investigate how cultural institutions can reshape perceptions of migration and foster inclusivity. SUR's involvement in the panel underscores its commitment to challenging existing narratives and advocating for change. Through a series of radical questions, SUR will offer valuable insights into the transformative potential of cultural spaces:
1. Reframing Western Narratives: During this discussion, SUR highlighes and challenges the dominance of Western institutions in shaping narratives about migrants and their environments. The SUR advocates for narratives to accurately represent the experiences and viewpoints of all stakeholders, promoting inclusivity and equity in storytelling.
2. Enhancing Accessibility: SUR will take part in formulating strategies for making cultural spaces more accessible to individuals with migratory backgrounds.
3. Artistic Redefinition: SUR will share ideas on artistic practices that can contribute to a redefinition of migration.
4. Supporting Instruments for Change: SUR will discuss the support mechanisms necessary to effect meaningful change in narrative discourse. This may include advocating for policy reforms, funding initiatives, and community engagement strategies to amplify marginalized voices.
5. Mobilizing Alternative Institutions: SUR will help explore the potential of alternative institutions in driving narrative change. By collaborating with grassroots organisations, community-led initiatives, and non-traditional platforms, cultural institutions can leverage collective action to challenge existing paradigms.
