How do people from Mülheim an der Ruhr experience their everyday life? What is good and what needs to change in the future? What connects people here and where are the points of contact missing? The issue of social segregation has always been a matter of concern for us, even before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, we exhibited City Portraits - Faces of a City, using 360° video to showcase Mülheim's conditions. We met 80+ strangers and heard their stories about aspirations, apprehensions, and experiences, revealing insights into their lives. We had one-to-one conversations with over 80 people we didn't know before. They talked about their lives in Mülheim, their wishes, worries and hopes. This resulted in video portraits of people of all ages and backgrounds, with very different views of the city and its inhabitants. In the virtual exhibition space, we now encounter their stories - of Mülheim residents who have lived here for a long time, who have moved here, who have fled, who have returned and who have stayed. The theme of living together has emerged as a crucial one. Is a common image of a future city emerging in which we can live together? We cordially invite you to rediscover Mülheim through the eyes of its inhabitants!

Sharing the space

On Thursday 22 June at 7pm we will open the exhibition with a joint debate entitled Sharing the space in cooperation with the Silent University Ruhr. We will begin with a keynote speech by Omar Mohamad and Dr Bridget Fonkeu from Silent University. Afterwards, we will lead into a multi-voiced discussion in which many different people will be heard on the topic. For the re-opening, we invite the people we interviewed back then, as well as decision-makers and people from the city society, to exchange views on the picture that emerges two years later. Admission is free! The event will be held in Englisch, Arabic and German.
